Minimalist Resume Templates
Minimalist resumes rely on typography and white space instead of colour and graphics. They read as confident and senior, they print well in black and white, and because there is nothing decorative to misread they tend to parse cleanly. MakeCV has two: Minimalist (centred, editorial) and Swiss (grid-based, with a single red accent).
- Layout: One column, dates in a left margin
- Photo: No photo area
- Look: Black and white, Playfair Display headings
- Suits: Consulting, finance, management, academia-adjacent roles
- Layout: Main column + narrow right column
- Photo: Optional, square (nothing shown if you skip it)
- Look: Inter, black labels, red accents
- Suits: Product, operations, architecture, design-minded corporate roles
Why minimalist works
A recruiter's first pass over a resume is short. Minimalist layouts help that pass by giving every element one job:
- Hierarchy through type size and weight, not boxes and colours. Your name is the largest thing on the page, job titles are bold, everything else is regular text.
- Dates in their own margin. In the Minimalist template, dates sit in a narrow left column next to each entry, so a reader can trace your career timeline at a glance.
- No photo area. Minimalist has no photo slot at all, which suits the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland, where photos are not expected.
Minimalist vs Swiss
| Minimalist | Swiss | |
|---|---|---|
| Columns | One reading column; dates in a left margin | Main column plus a narrow right column for skills, languages and certifications |
| Typography | Playfair Display name and headings, Inter body | Inter throughout, bold black section labels |
| Colour | Black and grey only | Black with a red accent |
| Photo | None | Optional square photo (nothing shown if you skip it) |
| ATS | Best | Good |
| Best for | Finance, consulting, management, research | Product, operations, architecture, design-minded corporate roles |
Writing for a minimalist layout
With no visual tricks, the words carry everything. Three habits make the difference:
- Lead every experience entry with a result. "Cut month-end close from 8 to 5 days" earns more attention than "Responsible for month-end close".
- Keep the summary tight. Two or three sentences centred on what you offer for this role. See resume summary examples.
- Prune ruthlessly. Minimalism is undermined by a list of 25 skills. Keep the 8–12 that the job advert actually asks for.
Minimalist is also a good choice for an academic-leaning CV that needs to stay short, for example when applying for industry research roles.
Printing and downloading
Both templates print cleanly on any office printer and photocopy without losing anything. For online applications, use the ATS PDF button (print dialog → Save as PDF) to get a text-based file; the standard Download PDF is image-based. Paper size is A4; see resume format if you apply in the US.
